Walking Among Giants: My Everest Base Camp Trek with Adventure Consultants - Part 3 - Arrival in Kathmandu, Nepal and First Impressions

First Impressions of Kathmandu

Up to this point, my biggest international trips had been to Germany, Poland, Austria, Tokyo Japan and various cruise ports through the Caribbean.  None of those prepared me for the experience of Kathmandu.  It was like nothing else.  The air was dirty (you could see the haze and dust in the air), the airport was old, but maintained and operational.  I absolutely loved it.  It was raw.  It was life.  It was real.

After deplaning the A330 via stairs, we made our way across the tarmac to the terminal building with the other weary-eyed travelers nearing their destination.  The border guards and airport personnel divided us into different groups based on whether we had applied for our visa before hand or needed to do so in person.  As we had obtained our visas prior to leaving the US, we were guided towards the cashiers window to pay for the visas and after a quick look at our documents and the payment of $50 USD each, we then headed into the immigration line where we had the visas attached to our passport books and stamped with our arrival dates.  The whole process took only around 10-15 minutes in total and we made our way to the luggage hall to collect our duffels.  When we rounded the corner into the luggage hall it was like a North Face store, with The North Face duffel bags of all colors stacked and sorted on the floors and conveyors.  It took a few minutes of searching, but we eventually found our bags having successfully followed us around the world from Florida.  As we had booked through on one ticket, there was no need to collect our luggage in Doha, and our luggage had been checked from Florida to Nepal.  We collected our duffel bags and loaded them onto our luggage trolleys and followed the signs to arrivals.  Adventure Consultants had been sure to let us know what to look for at the airport and what to do.

After an escalator ride with our trollies full of the supplies, we would need in the next few weeks and a quick photo op at the first sign we saw that said something to do with Nepal, we made our way outside.  Adventure Consultants gave us a heads up as to the chaos that would ensue once we left the airport with tour guides and taxi drivers trying to lure unsuspecting casual travelers to come with them for a ride to the city and on a tour.  Fortunately for us, Adventure Consultants had a local staff member there outside the airport holding a  sign waiting for our arrival.  We were greeted with a friendly hello and received a garland of marigolds to place around our necks.  Our bags were loaded into our van and off we went to the hotel.  After being a bit nervous about our arrival into Kathmandu, after this initial experience, I knew there was nothing to worry about.  I was relieved.  AC had made reservations and arrangements for us at the Radisson Hotel Kathmandu, which was centrally located to all the places we would really want to see in Kathmandu before and after our trek and was clean, spacious and felt safe.

This trip marked the first time that either of us had been to a place “off the beaten track.”  Thinking back to my first impressions, I just remember the traffic.  No lanes, limited traffic signals, yet everyone seemed to know exactly what to do.  It was a bit like a roller coaster ride from the airport to the Radisson Hotel where we were meeting the rest of our team including Suze Kelly, our lead guide and general manager of Adventure Consultants; more about our amazing guide later.

After being deposited safely at the hotel, away from the hustle and bustle of “Oz,” we met Suze in the lobby and discussed some initial particulars.  We were to meet up with the rest of the team later for an introduction and expedition kick off meeting with the other leaders of both the trek and expedition and discuss more plans and particulars of the mission ahead, but for now, since our room wasn’t quite ready due to the earliness of our arrival, we set our bags down and headed up to the hotel cafeteria for breakfast.  Breakfast was so fancy with china and properly attired and friend hotel service staff waiting by to pour fresh coffee or tea.  They had both traditional Nepalese and Indian offerings as well as western options like omelets, pastries, cereals, etc.  It was quite a lovely spread…and one I would come to welcome and appreciate even more after 18 days up in the mountains.

After breakfast and a chance to drop our luggage off in the room we met back up with Suze for a quick acclimatization trip to the Thamel region of Kathmandu.  Suze helped with the taxi situation, which was an experience in and of itself and helped us understand the process, negotiation, etc needed to catch a ride by ourselves if needed.  I guess you could call Thamel the “tourist” area of the city.  It catered greater to travelers with local hotels, food vendors, trekking gear and climbing equipment.  We were on the hunt for an ATM.  Nepal is a very cash reliant country, so as a point of recommendation, please plan to have access to cash upon your arrival in the country either through a bank or a local ATM (our western bank cards were accepted at the ATMs on their networks, so we had access at any ATM we encountered on the trip, making it pretty convenient overall.  With Nepalese Rupees in hand, we were ready.  We explored some of the shops in the area on our own for a bit, admiring the handicrafts of the local shopkeepers and stopping for a local beer at a fancy “nightclub” that was just getting ready to open for the day.  After a bit of window shopping, we made the adventurous decision to walk back to the hotel.  There were sidewalks, yes, but signal lights were sparse to cross the busy streets along the way, so it took a bit of a game of “Frogger” to make it back safety…but, we made it.

Not really remembering at this point when the last time I had actually slept for longer than a couple hours, the time had come for our team meeting to discuss logistics of the trek and expeditions and go over last minute details and safety information.  We met in the hotel conference room and met the rest of the team.  Ang Dorjee Sherpa was selected to be the expedition lead for the summit attempt.  This was his first time as expedition leader for AC and his nerves at his new role on the team showed, but with such a vast amount of experience under his belt (at this point he had summitted Everest 24 times as of the writing of this blog), confidence in his ability was high and everyone was confident the team he put together was only the best.  We met the assistant guides who would ensure our safety on the trek and the other climbers/trekkers.  It was a good group to say the least.

After the team meeting, we piled into a couple of vans and were treated to a fancy dinner at a lovely restaurant in Kathmandu called Le Sherpa that featured a menu of farm to table fresh international offerings…and beer.  We all toasted to a successful journey through the Khumbu region.  By this point in the evening, I was completely exhausted by what felt like a 36 hour day, (now that I think about it, I think that’s exactly what it more like 48 hours without since sleeping in an actual bed, although Qatar Airways business class is pretty nice and swanky, it’s still not a bed), the whole group headed back to the Radisson for a well-deserved rest, because the next day had some incredible and exciting things planned.

Walking Among Giants: My Everest Base Camp Trek with Adventure Consultants - Part 2 - Travel Day (or days) to Nepal

Backdrop of downtown Doha, Qatar at Night, 2023

Travel Day(s) to Nepal

We loaded our bags into the Uber and headed to the airport on March 30th.  It was a quick flight to Chicago on American Airlines.  We had booked our flight in Q-Suites from Chicago to Doha and were saddened when there was a change in equipment from the gorgeous A350-1000 to a slightly older A350-900, which did not have Q-Suites installed, also our seats were moved apart, so we would not be sitting next to each other for the 14 hour flight, which altogether was a bummer.  When we landed, we hopped on the shuttle to Terminal 5 in preparation for our long flight to Doha.  We did speak to the gate agent who had asked to verify our travel documents before boarding and after hearing that we had initially booked Q-Suites, he apologized and was able to move our seats around to give us better accommodations and got us seats next to each other so we could enjoy the service onboard together.  He provided us our handwritten departure lounge access passes and we were off to the lounge, feeling much relief for the long flight to come.  After having some basic food offerings and a couple of beverages, we were ready to board as they made the boarding announcement in the lounge.

We made our way to the gate as Group 1 was boarding and found our seats.  Immediately upon sitting down, the amazing onboard service provided by the Qatar Airways cabin crew began.  Rose champagne, amenity kits and fresh “loungewear” (aka flight PJs) were provided.  What an amazing way to start this long journey.  One of our cabin crew members was excited to hear of our journey ahead to Mount Everest and insisted she wanted to hear more about our trip and would come back later to catch up.  Not long after, the plane was fully loaded and after a quick safety briefing video, we pushed back from the gate and began to taxi.  Here we go, there was no turning back at this point.

Shortly after takeoff, as the evening began to descend upon us, the cabin crew began offering meal service.  The great thing about business class on Qatar Airways is that there is no “set” dining time.  It’s “dine on demand.”  The cabin crew did ask if we were ready for a meal and confirmed our orders and provide any pre-meal beverages we wished to have.  Our dining tables were set with all the accoutrements we would need for the fine-dining experience to come.  An amuse-bouche was provided of a small piece of beef topped with bits of gold foil.  As the cabin crew asked if I would like it, I just remember thinking….”an amuse-what?”  I do not consider myself “fancy.”  Sometimes it is nice to get dressed up and enjoy an evening out, but not to the extent of having the foggiest idea of what this “amuse-bouche” thing was.  But I said yes, and I liked it.  Maybe there is something to this “being fancy” thing.  A choice of appetizers were available, but based on research completed ahead of time, there was no choice for me.  It had to be the classic Arabic Mezze of hummus, muhammara and moutabel served with warm slices of flat bread.  Oh my, I was in Heaven, and it was only the appetizer course.  For the main course, I selected the biryani, which was well seasoned and unpretentious; a fine staple for the meal.  In a food coma and in culinary bliss, I thought there was no chance I would be able to enjoy anything else that evening.  I was wrong.  When presented with such a lovely berry tart and a glass of 20-year old Graham’s port, it was only polite to accept.  After the enchantment of that dining experience, I quickly changed into my loungewear and got ready to settle in for some rest and to enjoy the remainder of the flight.

Arrival in Qatar

Once we landed, it was evening already in Qatar.  Our fabulous cabin crew provided us with fine Laderach Swiss chocolates before bidding us a safe onward journey.

Something I had learned through my pre-trip planning was that if you had a long layover in Qatar you had the opportunity to book a Doha cultural tour that gave you the chance to leave the airport and tour the city and experience the local culture.  At the time, if you were booked in business class, this tour was complimentary.  So, before leaving for the trip, I made reservations for us on this tour.  We walked quickly, stopping to take a picture with the famous teddy bear in the terminal, making our way to the meet-up point for the tour in the airport.  Once everyone was present and accounted for, we made our way through immigration, being granted a short 4-day visitors visa (but really we only needed 4 hours) and boarded our luxury coach for the tour.

Our stop in Qatar came at the end of the holy month of Ramadan, so we were cognizant and mindful of locals and their observations during this time.  Fortunately we were able to experience Doha at night, so the city was alive with joyful sounds and spectacular lights as people were out and about, preparing for iftar.

Downtown Doha, Qatar at night

Our first stop was in a central district that contained modern shops, an artificial beach and boardwalk and a mosque.  As we exited the coach, I remember hearing the haunting yet intoxicating sounds of the call to prayer for Isha.  We walked along the empty sidewalks and the boardwalk while the call to prayer echoed in the background, capturing some captivating shots of the downtown business district of Doha as a backdrop.

The highlight of our tour was our experience in the Souq Waqif market.  It was a complete immersion in a traditional medina setting with bustling alleys full of shoppers, displays of bulk spices, handicrafts and touristy souvenirs, all in one space.  At this point it was after Iftar and the scene was full of people enjoying the evening and each other.  We walked along the alleys, experiencing local life, stopping to purchase some souvenirs, a ceramic decoration for the house and some fresh Turkish coffee, which is exactly what was needed to perk me up after not even knowing what day it was.

After our few exciting stops on the tour, it was time to head back to the airport.  We headed through a quick security check back into the terminal and then headed to the business class lounge to wait until our flight to Kathmandu.  Remember back to when I said I was not really “fancy?”  Well, this lounge really made me question that further.  Keep in mind that this lounge had been voted the number one business class lounge in the world.  I could believe it.  What a sight!  We rode the very long escalator up to the lounge entrance, having our boarding passes checked before doing so to ensure we were going to the right place.  Once we passed through the doors and beyond the walls, I was left speechless by the sight…the…opulence of what laid out before me.  “Yeah, I could totally get used to this,” I thought.  After settling in for a bit, taking a quick shower to refresh myself and relaxing, it was time for another meal.  We headed upstairs to the restaurant in the lounge that offered everything could you ever want, both in a buffet style or with seated table service.  We opted for the latter.

By the time we were done, it was finally time to continue on with our journey and we bade the lounge farewell…for now.  It did take us a while to figure out exactly where we had to go, but once we did, we made our way through the vastness of the Hamad International Airport to our gate, that was boarding.

Flight to Kathmandu, Nepal

We boarded an Airbus A330 and found our seats in the business class section again.  At this point of the trip, having no real idea what time of day or even what day it was, I was pretty exhausted, so sadly, at this time, much of this flight is a blur.  I remember seeing so many “trekkers” it seemed wearing trekking-style clothes and loading large hiking backpacks into the overhead bins.  Yes, we were definitely heading in the right direction as we had found our like-minded adventurers.  This flight was much shorter in comparison, I think just under 4 hours, and after enjoying a very similar menu to that which was provided on our trip from Chicago (I was really amazed at exactly how much the human body can consume in 36 hours) and settling in for a short movie, we had already begun our descent into Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal.  We were no longer in Kansas, or rather, Florida. In all, it had taken us just over 36 hours of travel to make it from Florida to Kathmandu.

Walking Among Giants: My Everest Base Camp Trek with Adventure Consultants - Part 1 - Preparation

It has been three years now since I embarked on the biggest adventure I’ve taken, to date; the awe-inspiring trek to Mount Everest’s Base Camp.  Yes, I’m just now able to write about it, and yes, some aspect of the trek surfaces in my mind daily.  Travel changes us (which is one of the reasons I became a travel agent, to help others experience the awesome power of travel). This trek changed me.

I guess in some way I have always been intrigued by Mount Everest.  For me, it was unattainable, it was distant, isolated in a far-off land that I barely knew about…and TALL. I grew up with both feet firmly planted on ground near sea level. I enjoyed vising the mountains of NC and see how lush and green it was, feeling the cool mountain air on my face, but it was hardly at altitude. But over time I realized that I was wrong.  It WAS attainable.  I COULD make the trip.  This was something I could actually do.  And then I saw the movie Everest, and I was obsessed.  I started researching the mountain, learning as much as I could, consuming information on the subject like a person finding water after being stranded in the desert.

The peak of Mount Everest

And then it happened; after researching companies that could make it possible, I asked my then-girlfriend (now my wife) if she would be interested in taking a journey with me to the base camp of the world’s tallest mountain.  She said “sure, why not?”  She already knew that I was crazy, having set out to run the Abbott World Marathon Majors (and at this point had already run 4 of them). Neither of us actually knew the repercussions of that agreement, but here we were, two people getting ready to set off on the adventure of a lifetime.  We were insane.

After watching Everest and doing my research, I decided that Adventure Consultants would be the company to take us there.  Yes, it may seem a bit perverse to make that decision after watching such a movie, but the horrible tragedy that unfolded 30 years ago now on the mountain in 1996 was NOT the fault of anyone within the company or even any person at all.  My heart hurts thinking of the lives lost and the permanent emotional toll that such a tragedy takes on anyone who did survive it. It was nature versus human…and nature will surely win each time.  The tragedy was real, but this company…the people…are the best in the industry and the best at what they do.  I knew I could trust them to get me up there and back down safely.  That was what was most important.  And note, this blog is not in any way sponsored by anyone.

After making that decision, we booked our trek in late 2022 for a trek beginning April 2023.  What were we thinking?  Hailing from Florida, an ant hill is considered to be “elevation.”  Outside of going skiing and some small-time hiking, I had never been on a real “mountain.”  Was I going to be able to breathe? Could we really afford this? How do you even GET to Nepal? How were we going to train for this and prepare ourselves for this? Would we be allowed into the country? There was a global pandemic going on! We needed to find out answers.

I chose this specific trek timing for a very particular reason; this trek group accompanied the climbers who would be making their ascent up to base camp in preparation for their extended stay to summit Mount Everest in May.  I wanted to be in the presence of some amazing mountaineers who were on their way to realize their own dreams (as we were to a lesser extent), who had sacrificed so much and worked so hard and had such ambition to achieve their goals; and as we would find out in the weeks to come, we would meet some most absolutely amazing people who would also become life-long friends all over the globe, who we miss dearly.

Shortly after paying out deposits and filling out the registration materials we received our initial contacts from the incredibly helpful staff at Adventure Consultants with a plethora of additional information, including itineraries, directions, packing lists, equipment lists, etc.  All was explained to us and expectations were set.  Boots, jackets, bags, hiking clothes, specific sunglasses, person items…all were detailed out in our documentation. Vaccinations.  Medications.  Physical examinations. It was all spelled out for us.  We went to our local REI with glimmer and excitement in our eyes and our hearts as we began to acquire all that was needed.  In the end a great majority of the things we purchased ended up coming from Amazon (as sad as I am to admit it), as it was most convenient for us living in Florida as our options otherwise were limited due to our geographical location.

Our first visit into REI was to purchase probably the most important and pivotal piece of equipment for an 18-day trek through the Himalaya Mountains; our boots. I remember the associate was so excited when we told her where we were going. Again, being in a location so far removed from anything “mountain” related, it was difficult to find the experience level we needed in helping us find the perfect pair of boots, but she tried hard and kept running into the backroom to ask other associates for advice to share with us.

With gear in hand, it was time to start narrowing down the particulars like vaccinations, health checkups and other aspects of the travel portion of the trek.  Adventure Consultants provided a list of recommended vaccinations, and I also relied on the CDC website for recommended vaccinations for the area.  Fortunately enough, the insurance provided through my employer covered the costs associated with all, but I know many others may not be as fortunate.  I also scheduled a visit with a doctor specializing in altitude, sports medicine and international travel who helped guide me through recommendations and prescriptions that were suggested for vising Nepal and climbing to altitude like treatments for digestive ailments and for altitude sickness, but more coming on that as we go.  With clean bills of health, the last major pre-trek hurdle checked off the list.

But, as the world is always ready to test us and see how we handle it, fate it would seem had a curveball.

As I mentioned earlier, I had been on my own personal mission to run and complete in the 6 Abbott World Marathon Majors (the Chicago, NYC, Boston, Tokyo, London and Berlin marathons). Months prior, on a whim, I put my name in a lottery for an entry into the 2023 Tokyo Marathon. There was only around a 3% chance that I would get selected for the general lottery for the race, so I figured it wouldn’t happen and we’d just focus on finish the preparation for our Nepal trip. Well, one morning, I woke and checked my email and there it was; an email from the Tokyo Marathon congratulating me on my selection. I was stunned. “What?!” I walked out and told my significant other, “Well, we’re going to Tokyo.”

Why is this relevant to a story about a trek to Everest Base Camp? The Tokyo Marathon takes place the first weekend in March. We were scheduled to leave our home for Nepal at the end of March. So not only did I find myself planning an 18-day trip to Nepal, I now needed to plan a whirlwind 4-day trip to Tokyo for the marathon! Spoiler alert, it was a success. See my blog about that experience

We got our final details provided to us and registered for our Nepal visa’s online and were cleared for travel.  The Nepalese visa was a simple application online.  We registered for the 30-day visitor’s visa which at that time was $50, payable in cash (US Currency) when you landed in Nepal. Filling out our visa applications online saved us so much time when we arrived.

Flight options from Florida to Nepal were limited as only a couple of large international carriers operate daily flights to Kathmandu.  Being a Oneworld Alliance elite member, I opted for booking through American Airlines with the long-haul flights operated by Qatar Airways…and wow.  This was our first experience on Qatar Airways, or rather any Middle East carrier, and I am now hooked.  We booked business class due to the length of flights from the US and so we could be sure we were comfortable and refreshed upon arrival in Kathmandu.  With our flights booked and our bags packed, travel day was upon us.

Rotational Dining on the Disney Treasure: Dinner as a Storytelling Adventure

Dining aboard the Disney Treasure isn’t simply about eating dinner—it’s about stepping into a story. One of the most beloved traditions of sailing with Disney Cruise Line is its rotational dining system, an approach designed to blend culinary excellence with immersive storytelling and world-class service.

On the Disney Treasure, guests rotate through three spectacular themed restaurants throughout their voyage: 1923, Worlds of Marvel, and Plaza de Coco. Each offers a completely different atmosphere, cuisine, and theatrical experience while maintaining one special constant—your dining team follows you from restaurant to restaurant throughout the cruise.

The result is a dining program that feels personal, immersive, and uniquely Disney.

What Is Rotational Dining?

Unlike most cruise lines where guests dine in the same restaurant each evening, Disney Cruise Line created the concept of rotational dining to provide both variety and personalized service.

Here’s how it works:

  • Every evening, guests are assigned to one of three main restaurants.

  • Over the course of the cruise, guests rotate between all three restaurants.

  • Your serving team rotates with you, learning your preferences along the way.

That means by the third or fourth night, your server often remembers things like:

  • Your preferred drink order

  • How you like your steak cooked

  • Which desserts your kids loved

  • Whether someone in your party has dietary needs

It’s a small detail that makes a huge difference. The consistency of service combined with ever-changing environments creates a dining experience that feels both familiar and fresh each night.

On a 7-night Disney Treasure sailing, guests typically dine in each restaurant at least twice, allowing them to experience multiple menus or storylines in some venues.

The Rotational Dining Restaurants on Disney Treasure

The Disney Treasure features three main rotational restaurants, each offering its own theme, atmosphere, cuisine, and entertainment.

Plaza de Coco

Theme

Inspired by Pixar’s Coco, Plaza de Coco is one of the most ambitious theatrical dining experiences Disney Cruise Line has ever created. The restaurant transports guests into the vibrant town square of Santa Cecilia, with colorful décor, papel picado banners, glowing lanterns, and an elaborate central stage.

The dining room is designed as theater-in-the-round, meaning tables surround the stage so that every guest feels part of the show.

The Theatrical Experience

Plaza de Coco offers two different dinner shows on a 7-night sailing:

Night One – A Celebration of Family

  • Miguel and his family gather in Mariachi Plaza

  • Live mariachi musicians perform

  • Guests experience a heartwarming story celebrating family traditions

Night Two – Día de los Muertos Celebration

  • Miguel reunites with ancestors including Héctor and Mama Imelda

  • The story continues with music, dancing, and vibrant stage effects

The performances unfold around the room while servers deliver courses, blending dining and live entertainment seamlessly.

Cuisine

The menu celebrates the flavors of Mexico with both traditional and modern dishes such as:

  • Chorizo street croquettes

  • Shrimp diabla

  • Pollo asado

  • Pan-seared adobo sea bass

  • Coconut tres leches cake

  • Mexican chocolate tart

This is truly dinner and a show, where food, music, and storytelling merge into one unforgettable evening.

Worlds of Marvel

Theme

Worlds of Marvel transforms dinner into an interactive superhero adventure. The dining room is styled like a high-tech Avengers facility, complete with screens, glowing technology, and Marvel imagery throughout the space.

This restaurant allows guests to become part of the story while they dine.

Interactive Dinner Shows

There are two different story experiences during a voyage.

Avengers: Quantum Encounter

During this show, guests help Spider-Man and the Avengers stop a villain who attempts to steal powerful quantum technology. The story unfolds on screens throughout the restaurant, turning the dining room into a superhero mission.

Marvel Celebration of Heroes: Groot Remix

Exclusive to the Disney Treasure, this storyline follows Groot as he plans a surprise party for Rocket Raccoon. The show includes:

  • Interactive moments with guests

  • Marvel trivia challenges

  • A “Guardians of the Galaxy” style Awesome Mix soundtrack

Cuisine

The menu reflects the global scope of the Marvel universe, drawing inspiration from different fictional locations and cultures.

Example dishes include:

  • Wakandan-inspired salads

  • Bao buns and Asian-inspired appetizers

  • Pym Doughnut Sundae dessert

  • International fusion entrées inspired by locations like New York and Sokovia

This restaurant is particularly popular with families, Marvel fans, and anyone who enjoys interactive dining.

1923

Theme

Named for the year The Walt Disney Company was founded, 1923 is a love letter to the early days of Disney animation and the glamour of Hollywood’s Golden Age.

The restaurant is divided into two dining rooms:

  • Walt Disney Dining Room

  • Roy Disney Dining Room

Both spaces feature over 1,000 pieces of Disney animation artwork, sketches, props, and models, showcasing the history of Disney storytelling.

Unlike the other restaurants, 1923 focuses more on elegance and culinary artistry rather than stage performances. You are assigned to one or the other, either Walt or Roy, for the duration of your cruise. However you may have the opportunity to experience the other for embarkation lunch or debarkation breakfast.

Culinary Focus

The menu celebrates California cuisine, blending global influences and fresh ingredients inspired by the multicultural food scene of the Golden State.

Example dishes include:

  • Beef Wellington (delicious in my opinion)

  • Seared sea bass

  • Short ribs

  • Fresh salads and seafood

  • Classic crème brûlée

The experience feels like dining inside a museum of Disney animation history, where each wall tells part of the company’s creative story.

Why Rotational Dining Works So Well

Disney’s rotational dining concept succeeds because it blends three powerful elements:

1. Variety

Each night feels different—from an elegant Hollywood restaurant to a Marvel adventure to a musical celebration of Mexican culture.

2. Storytelling

Disney’s Imagineers treat each dining venue as an extension of the ship’s entertainment.

Dinner becomes part of the narrative.

3. Personalized Service

Because your servers travel with you from restaurant to restaurant, they quickly learn your preferences and create a more personalized experience than most cruise dining programs can offer.

The Magic of Dining on the Disney Treasure

By the end of a seven-night sailing, rotational dining becomes more than a restaurant schedule—it becomes part of the rhythm of the cruise.

You’ll remember:

  • Singing along with mariachi music in Plaza de Coco

  • Helping Groot throw the ultimate space party

  • Admiring vintage Disney animation sketches over a perfectly cooked filet

It’s a system designed not just to feed guests, but to immerse them in storytelling, culture, and shared experiences.

And like everything on a Disney cruise, it turns something ordinary—dinner—into something magical.

Mardi Gras at Universal Orlando Resort: The Ultimate 2026 Guide to Parades, Food, Concerts & Travel Tips

If you're planning a Universal Orlando vacation and wondering what makes Mardi Gras at Universal Orlando Resort one of the most celebrated theme park events of the year, this comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know. As a travel advisor who attends Mardi Gras at Universal every single year, I’ve gathered insider tips, crowd-avoiding tricks, food recommendations, and all the best-kept secrets that will help you plan the perfect trip.

From the dazzling Mardi Gras parade and themed floats to the global cuisine at the International Flavors of Carnaval and star-studded concert lineup, this is one Universal event you don’t want to miss.

What Is Mardi Gras at Universal Orlando Resort?

Mardi Gras at Universal Orlando is an annual spring celebration included with admission to Universal Studios Florida. The event blends New Orleans-style festivities with Universal’s signature entertainment, offering:

  • A nightly Mardi Gras parade

  • Elaborate themed floats designed with Mardi Gras artisans

  • Colorful street performers, dancers, stilt walkers & musicians

  • International Flavors of Carnaval food booths

  • A live concert series featuring big-name artists

  • Seasonal merchandise, photo ops & themed décor

It’s one of the best seasonal events in Orlando and a major highlight for both theme park fans and first-time visitors.

The Mardi Gras Parade at Universal Orlando: Floats, Beads & Fan-Favorite Entertainment

The Universal Mardi Gras parade is the centerpiece of the event and one of the most spectacular theme park parades in Florida.

What to Expect from the Parade

Each night, the streets of Universal Studios come alive with:

  • Massive, beautifully themed floats designed by the same team responsible for New Orleans Mardi Gras floats

  • Dancers in vibrant, feathered costumes

  • Stilt walkers and roaming performers

  • Dozens of bead-throwers tossing brightly colored beads into the crowd

The parade theme changes each year, which makes every season unique. The excitement, music, and energy feel like a family-friendly version of Mardi Gras in New Orleans—right in Orlando.

Best Spots to Catch Beads

Want to maximize your bead haul? Stand:

  • Near the beginning or end of the parade route

  • On parade corners (float riders tend to toss more beads here)

  • Near the Music Plaza area for optimal float views

Pro Tip: Arrive 30–45 minutes early on weekends and concert nights to claim a good viewing spot.

Dancers, Performers & Costumes: The Heart of Universal Mardi Gras

One of the biggest reasons guests love Mardi Gras at Universal is the nonstop entertainment. During the day and evening, you’ll see:

  • Performers inspired by global Carnaval culture

  • Costumed dancers wearing sequins, feathers & masks

  • Street entertainers offering photo ops

  • Musical performers playing jazz, Latin rhythms & carnival beats

These performers rotate throughout the event, giving each visit a slightly different experience.

International Flavors of Carnaval: The Best Food at Universal Mardi Gras

If you're a foodie like me, the International Flavors of Carnaval is reason enough to visit. Universal Studios transforms into an outdoor food festival filled with flavors from around the world.

Popular Food Booths from Previous Seasons

Though the menus change each year, previous years have featured:

  • New Orleans: gumbo, jambalaya, beignets, shrimp & grits

  • Brazil: feijoada, crispy pastel pastries

  • Puerto Rico: mofongo, tostones, elotes locos

  • India: butter chicken, naan dishes

  • Trinidad & Tobago: doubles & spicy Caribbean bites

  • Belgium: waffles dipped in chocolate

This global menu makes Mardi Gras one of Universal’s top food festivals, on par with EPCOT festivals but with more bold, carnival-style flavors.

Money-Saving Tip: Universal often sells tasting lanyards or food & beverage cards—these frequently lower your average cost per item.

Universal Mardi Gras Concert Series: Included With Admission

On select nights, the Music Plaza Stage hosts a free concert series featuring mainstream artists. Past performers have included:

  • KC & The Sunshine Band

  • Gavin DeGraw

  • Diana Ross

  • LL COOL J

  • BUSH

  • Live!

  • The Goo Goo Dolls

  • Sean Paul

  • Zedd

These concerts fill quickly and are included in park admission for all guests; plan to arrive an hour or more early on major performer nights. If using an annual pass for access, please be aware that certain level passes are blacked out during concert nights.

Best-Kept Secrets, Insider Tips & Travel Hacks for Universal Mardi Gras

As someone who attends this event every year, these are my tried-and-true insider strategies for getting the best experience:

1. Sign Up to Ride a Mardi Gras Float

Yes—you can actually ride a Mardi Gras float at Universal.
Annual Passholders typically get priority, but day guests can sometimes join via the Virtual Line in the app. It’s one of the most unforgettable experiences Universal offers. Universal also offers dining packages that include the ability to ride on a Mardi Gras Float.

2. Visit on a Weeknight

Weekends (especially concert nights) draw the largest crowds. If you want to enjoy more food booths with shorter lines, go Monday–Thursday.

3. Don’t Miss the Mardi Gras Tribute Store

Every season features a themed store with multiple immersive rooms, exclusive souvenirs, and amazing photo spots. It’s a hidden gem many first-time visitors skip.

4. Start at the Back of the Park for Food

Crowds naturally gather near the front of the park and around the lagoon. Start your tasting journey in the back half of the park to avoid lines.

5. Plan Your Dining Ahead of Time

CityWalk restaurants fill up fast on concert and parade nights. Making a reservation ahead of time can save you 45–60 minutes of waiting.

6. Stay On-Site for Easy Access

Universal’s hotels offer:

  • Early park entry

  • Shorter transportation times

  • Lounge and poolside Mardi Gras offerings (varies by hotel)

  • Premium resorts offer Express Pass packages at no extra charge

Staying onsite makes attending the nighttime festivities significantly easier.

7. Check for Parade Times Early

Parade schedules change depending on the night; some evenings may have earlier start times for families.

Is Mardi Gras at Universal Orlando Kid-Friendly?

Yes! Universal’s Mardi Gras is designed to be fun for the entire family. Kids love the parade, dancers, costumes, global food booths, and photo ops. Some parade routes even feature “Little Jester” areas for safer kid-friendly viewing.

Why Plan Your Trip With a Travel Agent Who Attends Mardi Gras Every Year

With new dishes, parade themes, floats, and performers each year, planning Mardi Gras at Universal Orlando can feel overwhelming—especially if it’s your first visit. That’s where I come in.

As a travel agent who visits Mardi Gras annually, I provide:

  • Personalized itineraries

Why Using a Disney Travel Professional Is the Secret to a Stress-Free Disney Vacation

Planning a Walt Disney World, Disneyland, or Disney Cruise Line vacation is an exciting adventure—but let’s be honest: it can also be overwhelming. Between Genie+, Lightning Lanes, virtual queues, dining reservations, transportation logistics, resort selections, and ever-changing park policies, the “Most Magical Place on Earth” can quickly become the “Most Confusing Trip You’ll Ever Plan.”

That’s where a Disney travel professional becomes your greatest ally.

A certified Disney travel planner doesn’t just book your vacation—they guide you through every step, ensuring you get the most value, the best experiences, and the least stress. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned Disney fan, partnering with a travel expert can transform your trip into something seamless, magical, and tailored to your family.

Below is a deep dive into why using a Disney travel professional is not just helpful—it’s essential.

1. Disney Vacations Are More Complex Than Ever

Gone are the days when planning a Disney trip meant buying a ticket and showing up. Today’s Disney experience involves layers of logistics that even repeat visitors struggle to navigate.

• Park Pass Reservations

Certain ticket types still require advance reservations, and availability fluctuates—especially during peak seasons and holidays.

• Genie+ & Lightning Lanes

Disney’s line-skipping tools are powerful but complex. Travelers must understand:

  • When to purchase Genie+

  • Which attractions need Individual Lightning Lanes

  • The best times to make selections

  • How to craft an efficient strategy for each park

A Disney travel pro helps maximize your time and minimize waits.

• Virtual Queues

Attractions like TRON Lightcycle / Run and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind rely on virtual queues with strict timing windows. Missing a drop means missing the ride.

• Dining Reservations & Dining Plans

Dining reservations open 60 days in advance at 6:00 AM EST, and top restaurants fill instantly. A travel professional will:

  • Handle the reservation wake-up times

  • Suggest restaurants that fit your vibe

  • Build meal timing around your park plans

  • Help optimize the Disney Dining Plan

• Resort & Room Category Complexity

Value, Moderate, Deluxe… Monorail resorts… Skyliner access… Room view categories…
Choosing the right resort is an art. An expert helps narrow options based on budget, transportation, pace, and personal preferences.

• Seasonal Events & Limited-Time Offerings

From Halloween parties to EPCOT festivals and runDisney races, timing matters—your planner will help you build an itinerary around the can’t-miss extras.

• Transportation Strategy

Buses, monorails, boats, walking paths, and the Disney Skyliner all have pros and cons. Using the right one at the right time saves stress and hours.

A Disney expert helps you manage all of it effortlessly.

2. Save Time, Stress, and Hours of Research

Most families spend 20–40 hours researching their trip. A Disney travel professional cuts that down dramatically by:

  • Providing personalized recommendations

  • Crafting park-by-park itineraries

  • Explaining Genie+ strategies

  • Answering your questions quickly

  • Helping you avoid information overload

Instead of stress, you get confidence.

3. They Monitor Promotions—Even After You Book

Disney frequently releases new discounts, and they often book up immediately. A travel professional watches for:

  • Room discounts

  • Ticket promotions

  • Package deals

  • Seasonal savings

When a deal is released, they automatically apply it to your reservation when eligible—saving you money without you needing to monitor anything.

4. Personalized Planning Tailored to Your Family

A Disney vacation is deeply personal. A dedicated planner creates custom strategies based on:

  • Ages and interests

  • Height requirements

  • Food preferences and allergies

  • Must-do attractions

  • Preferred pace

  • Budget

  • Special celebrations

  • Accessibility needs

This ensures your trip feels curated—not generic.

5. No Extra Cost to You

One of the best-kept secrets in the travel industry:
Disney travel professionals cost you nothing extra.

Disney pays the commission, whether you use a planner or not. So instead of letting that value go unused, you get:

  • Expert guidance

  • Hands-on planning

  • Ongoing support

  • Stress-free vacation prep

at no additional cost.

6. They Stay Current on Constantly Changing Rules

Policies shift frequently at Disney—sometimes overnight. A trained Disney professional keeps up with:

  • Genie+ system changes

  • Queue strategies

  • Festival schedules

  • Dining updates

  • Seasonal events

  • Resort refurbishments

  • New attractions

  • Transportation changes

You’ll always have the most accurate and up-to-date information.

7. On-Trip Support When You Need It Most

If something goes wrong—or if you’re confused about anything mid-trip—your planner is there to help with:

  • Last-minute questions

  • App troubleshooting

  • Dining cancellation assistance

  • Tips when crowds spike

  • Backup plans for weather or ride closures

It’s like having your own personal concierge service.

8. Insider Tips You Won’t Find on Google

Travel professionals bring real-world, firsthand experience.
And in your case—8 years as a Disney Annual Passholder—your insider knowledge goes far beyond training.

You know:

  • Optimal times to ride

  • Hidden path shortcuts

  • Best parade and fireworks viewing spots

  • Where to find rare characters

  • How to maximize Genie+ based on crowd patterns

  • Smart midday break strategies

  • PhotoPass hidden magic shots

  • Seasonal must-dos visitors miss

That combination of personal experience + professional training is invaluable.

9. A Perfect Fit for Every Type of Traveler

Cruisers
Disneyland visitors
First-timers
Planners who haven’t been in years
Holiday travelers
runDisney participants
Large groups
Honeymooners

Everyone benefits from a guide who knows the system inside and out.

The Ultimate Packing List for a 7-Day (or Longer) Cruise

Setting sail on a week-long cruise is one of the best ways to combine adventure, relaxation, and seamless travel. But packing? That can get overwhelming—especially when you're preparing for multiple ports, onboard activities, formal dinners, and unpredictable weather. To help you feel fully prepared (and stress-free), here’s the ultimate cruise packing list tailored for trips of seven days or more.

1. Cruise Essentials

Before you toss anything into your suitcase, make sure you have the most important items squared away:

  • Passport / ID (Check that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your return date.)

    • Before departure, be sure to confirm with your travel agent/advisor or the cruise line directly to ensure you have the correct level of documentation, such as parental permission letter for minor children, birth certificates if you don’t have a passport, etc. The list varies based on destinations and cruise lines.

  • Cruise documents & confirmations

  • Luggage tags provided by the cruise line

  • Credit cards & some cash for tipping and ports

  • Travel insurance information

  • Copies of important documents stored separately

2. Clothing for Every Occasion

One of the trickiest parts of cruise packing is preparing for a variety of settings—from sunbathing to dining rooms to offshore adventures. Here’s a simple and complete breakdown.

Daytime & Casual Wear

  • Lightweight shorts

  • T-shirts or tank tops

  • Sundresses or casual rompers

  • Swimwear (pack at least 2–3)

  • Cover-ups

  • Flip-flops or sandals

Evening Wear

  • Casual dinner outfits (7+)

  • Formal night attire (if your cruise line offers a formal night)

    • Cocktail dress or gown

    • Button-down shirt, slacks, optional jacket or suit

      • Personally, I enjoy getting all dressed up and wear a tuxedo on formal night. It’s nice to get dressed up every now and then.

Active & Specialty Clothing

  • Workout clothing

  • Sneakers or walking shoes

  • Excursion-specific items (e.g., water shoes, rash guard)

  • Light sweater or shawl (ships get chilly)

Outerwear

  • Lightweight rain jacket

  • Cardigan or hoodie for cool evenings out on deck.

3. Toiletries & Personal Care

Cruise cabins rarely stock as much as a hotel, and prices onboard can be steep, so pack what you know you’ll need.

  • Shampoo & conditioner (travel or refillable sizes)

    • Many cruise lines offer this in cabin, so you might be able to save space in your luggage by not bringing these. Confirm with your travel agent.

  • Body wash & lotion

    • Same as above.

  • Toothbrush/toothpaste

  • Deodorant

  • Razor

  • Makeup & remover

  • Hairbrush/hair ties

  • Sunscreen (reef-safe for certain destinations)

  • After-sun gel

  • Medications (plus extras)

  • Seasickness remedies (Bonine, Dramamine, motion bands)

  • Small first-aid kit (bandages, antiseptic, pain relievers)

4. Tech & Gadgets

Cruise cabins have limited outlets, and Wi-Fi may be slower than at home, so a few key items can make your life much easier.

  • Phone + charger

  • Portable charger

  • Multi-outlet USB hub

  • Waterproof phone pouch

  • Camera or GoPro

  • Headphones

  • E-reader or tablet

  • Binoculars (great for Alaska and scenic cruising)

5. Packing for Excursions

Whether you're exploring ancient ruins, zip-lining in the Caribbean, or wandering a historic port town, excursions require smart packing.

  • Small daypack or crossbody bag

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Reef-safe sunscreen

  • Hat & sunglasses

  • Insect repellent

  • Comfortable closed-toe shoes

  • Travel towel for beach days

  • Copies of port excursion confirmations

6. Cruise Cabin Must-Haves

Cruise cabins are compact, and staying organized is the secret to keeping your room tidy all week.

  • Magnetic hooks (cruise cabin walls are magnetic!)

  • Over-the-door organizer for toiletries

  • Pop-up laundry hamper

  • Ziplock bags (for snacks, wet swimsuits, etc.)

  • Wrinkle-release spray (irons are typically not allowed in cabins)

  • Nightlight (cabins get very dark)

  • Refillable mug or insulated cup

7. A Few “Why Didn’t I Pack That?” Items

These small items are often the MVPs of cruise travel:

  • Lanyard for key card

    • Many cruise lines sell these on board as a fun souvenir of your trip, but to save a few extra dollars, bring yours from home!

  • Aloe for sunburns

  • Dryer sheets (reduces static in the humid Caribbean air)

  • Small medications like antacids and cold remedies

  • Playing cards or small games

  • Highlighters (to mark activities in the daily schedule)

  • Lightweight tote for pool deck or buffet trips

  • Alcoholic beverages

    • Check with your travel agent as each cruise line differs in what and how much you can bring yourself on board, but this can save you $$ by bringing your own to enjoy in your stateroom.

8. Packing Strategy Tips

To maximize space and avoid wrinkles:

  • Roll, don’t fold clothing

  • Use packing cubes for organization

  • Pack a carry-on with day-one essentials (bathing suit, charger, medication, change of clothes)

    • It can be many hours after embarkation before you are reunited with your checked baggage onboard. Bring everything you think you’ll need up to bedtime on that first night on your carry-on.

  • Wear your bulkiest clothing on embarkation day

  • Leave room for souvenirs—you’ll want them!

    • Check with your travel agent on what the luggage limitations are for your specific cruise. They vary based on length of cruise and cruise line, and also level of service or status with each cruise line.

Final Thoughts

A 7-day or longer cruise gives you plenty of time to relax, explore, and indulge—and the right packing list ensures you’re ready for every moment. With a little planning, your suitcase can be both efficient and comprehensive, freeing you up to enjoy the best part of cruising: the getaway itself.

Bon voyage! 🚢✨

Discovering the Benchlands: Beamsville vs. Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario’s Wine Country

When travelers think of Ontario’s wine country, Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL) often comes to mind—historic streets, grand estates, and a bustling tourism scene. But just a short drive west, the Niagara Benchlands—especially the charming town of Beamsville—offer a different, more intimate side of the region’s celebrated wine culture. If you’re seeking a unique, less-crowded wine experience, let’s explore why Beamsville and the Benchlands deserve a spot on your next itinerary.

The Benchlands & Beamsville: A Hidden Gem

The Niagara Benchlands stretch along the Niagara Escarpment, an ancient geological formation that creates a microclimate ideal for cool-climate grape varieties like Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Beamsville, at the heart of this region, is home to boutique, family-run wineries where visitors are often greeted by the owners themselves. The landscape is rugged and picturesque—vineyards perched on rolling hills with panoramic views of Lake Ontario.

Top Experiences in Beamsville & the Benchlands:

  • Intimate Tastings: Enjoy one-on-one tastings at acclaimed wineries like Thirty Bench, Hidden Bench, and Fielding Estate.

  • Farm-to-Table Dining: Savor local cuisine at charming bistros and winery restaurants.

  • Outdoor Adventure: Hike the Bruce Trail or cycle between vineyards for an active day out.

A view of the vineyards from the Fielding Estate Winery in Beamsville, Ontario.

Niagara-on-the-Lake: Ontario’s Wine Tourism Capital

Niagara-on-the-Lake is the region’s most famous destination, known for its historic downtown, grand hotels, and dozens of wineries ranging from boutique to world-renowned estates. It’s a hub for group tours, festivals, and events, making it lively—especially during peak season.

Highlights of NOTL:

  • Historic Charm: Stroll through 19th-century streets, boutique shops, and the renowned Shaw Festival Theatre.

  • High-Profile Wineries: Visit iconic estates like Peller Estates, Inniskillin, and Jackson-Triggs.

  • Vibrant Tourism Scene: Expect bustling tasting rooms, organized tours, and a lively social atmosphere.

Comparing Tourism Levels: Benchlands vs. Niagara-on-the-Lake

Niagara-on-the-Lake attracts significantly more tourists year-round, especially in summer and fall. Its proximity to Niagara Falls, abundance of accommodations, and frequent events make it a magnet for both local and international visitors. As a result, wineries can be busy, and reservations are strongly recommended.

Beamsville and the Benchlands, by contrast, remain quieter and more relaxed. The slower pace means more personalized experiences—fewer tour buses and more opportunities to chat with winemakers or enjoy a peaceful picnic among the vines. For travelers who value authenticity and tranquility over crowds and spectacle, the Benchlands are a refreshing alternative.

Which Region is Right for You?

  • Choose Niagara-on-the-Lake if you love vibrant atmospheres, a wide range of dining and accommodation options, and a bustling calendar of events.

  • Opt for Beamsville and the Benchlands if you prefer a slower pace, direct connection with local vintners, and stunning natural landscapes.

Planning Your Visit

Both regions are easily accessible from Toronto and can be combined for a diverse wine country getaway. Whether you’re looking for VIP perks at luxury estates or hidden gems off the beaten path, I can help craft a personalized itinerary to match your travel style.

Halloween Horror Nights - Universal Studios Orlando

If you’re a thrill-seeker or a fan of all things spooky, Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) at Universal Orlando Resort is the can’t-miss event of the fall! As one of the world’s premier Halloween celebrations, HHN transforms Universal Studios Florida into a maze of haunted houses, scare zones, and electrifying entertainment, and personally, it’s one of my favorite things to do throughout the year. Here’s everything you need to know to plan an unforgettable night of frights in 2025.

2025 Event Dates

Halloween Horror Nights Orlando runs select nights from August 29 through November 2, 2025. The event typically kicks off at 6:30 PM and runs late into the night, with specific dates and times available on Universal Orlando’s official HHN calendar.

Early Admission & “Stay and Scream” Options

Want to maximize your scares and minimize your wait times? Here’s how:

Early Admission

  • Universal Studios Florida day guests with valid theme park admission and a separate HHN ticket can access select haunted houses before the general public.

  • Early admission typically begins around 5:00 PM from designated holding areas inside the park.

“Stay and Scream” Zones

  • Purchase both a daytime Universal Studios Florida ticket and an HHN event ticket, or you can purchase a “Scream Early” ticket which just allows you access to the Stay and Scream holding areas, without a daytime ticket.

  • At park closing, head to a designated “Stay and Scream” holding area (like Springfield or New York). These areas are subject to change; for example, last year, Springfield USA was not a selected Stay and Scream area, which was disappointing).

  • You’ll be among the first to enter the haunted houses when HHN officially opens, beating the crowds at the front gate.

Themed Food & Drink Highlights

No HHN experience is complete without indulging in the event’s limited-edition treats and drinks. For 2025, expect:

  • Sinister Sips: Past years libations include “Blood Moon Margarita,” “Ghoul Juice,” and “Pumpkin Patch Punch.” More information will be released in the coming months providing details regarding this years offerings.

  • Frightful Bites: The menu for 2025 has not yet been released, however this will usually include staples like pizza fries and twisted taters.

  • Vegan & Gluten-Free Options: Universal continues to expand its inclusive menus, with plant-based and allergy-friendly selections at most food stands.

Nightmare Fuel Show

Back by overwhelming demand, the Nightmare Fuel show promises jaw-dropping pyrotechnics, aerial performances, and pulse-pounding dance numbers. This high-energy spectacle is included with your HHN admission and runs several times nightly in the Fear Factor Live venue. Arrive early—seating fills up fast!

VIP Experiences & “Behind the Screams” Tours

For those looking to elevate their HHN adventure, Universal offers several exclusive experiences:

Carnival Cruise Line: A Legacy of Affordable and Enjoyable Vacations at Sea

When it comes to cruising, Carnival Cruise Line is a name that resonates with travelers worldwide. Known for its vibrant atmosphere, affordability, and commitment to fun, Carnival has carved a niche as a go-to cruise line for families, couples, and solo travelers alike. Let’s dive into the history of Carnival, explore its vision for the future, and see how it compares to other major cruise lines like Disney, Royal Caribbean, MSC, and Virgin Voyages.

Carnival Celebration as backdrop in Amber Cove, Puerto Plata, DR.

A Brief History of Carnival Cruise Line

Founded in 1972 by Ted Arison, Carnival Cruise Line set out to make cruising accessible to the masses. Its first ship, the Mardi Gras, was a converted ocean liner that introduced the concept of "Fun Ships" to the cruising world. Carnival didn’t just want to offer a mode of transportation—it aimed to create an experience filled with entertainment, dining, and relaxation.

Over the decades, Carnival has grown into one of the largest cruise lines in the world, boasting a fleet of over 20 ships. It has become synonymous with affordable vacations, offering a wide range of itineraries to destinations such as the Caribbean, Alaska, Europe, and beyond. Carnival is also a key player in the Carnival Corporation, a global cruise powerhouse that includes other brands like Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, and Costa Cruises.

The Future Vision: Innovation and Sustainability

Carnival Cruise Line isn’t resting on its laurels. The company is actively investing in its fleet and operations to enhance guest experiences and prioritize sustainability.

  1. Fleet Expansion and Modernization: Carnival continues to introduce new ships with innovative features. The Mardi Gras (2021), named after the original ship, is a prime example, featuring the first-ever roller coaster at sea. Its sister ships, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee, are also part of the Excel-class fleet, designed to elevate the cruising experience with state-of-the-art and fun amenities and eco-friendly technology.

  2. Sustainability Goals: Carnival is committed to reducing its environmental footprint. The Excel-class ships are powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), one of the cleanest-burning fossil fuels. The company is also exploring initiatives like advanced wastewater treatment systems, energy-efficient designs, and partnerships to reduce single-use plastics.

  3. Enhanced Guest Experiences: Carnival is focusing on delivering more personalized and immersive experiences. From expanded dining options to onboard entertainment like live shows and themed events, the cruise line is doubling down on its promise to deliver fun for everyone.

Carnival vs. Other Cruise Lines: A Comparison

Carnival Cruise Line operates in a competitive industry, but it stands out for its affordability and lively atmosphere. Here’s how it compares to other major players:

  • Disney Cruise Line: Disney is renowned for its family-friendly cruises, complete with character meet-and-greets, themed dining, and Broadway-style shows. While Disney offers a magical experience, it comes at a premium price. Carnival, on the other hand, provides an affordable alternative with plenty of family-friendly activities and entertainment.

  • Royal Caribbean: Known for its innovation, Royal Caribbean offers mega-ships with features like surf simulators, ice-skating rinks, and skydiving simulators. While Royal Caribbean focuses on high-tech, adrenaline-pumping activities, Carnival emphasizes a more relaxed and budget-friendly approach, making it accessible to a broader audience.

  • MSC Cruises: MSC is a European-based cruise line that blends sophistication with affordability. While MSC appeals to travelers seeking a more cosmopolitan experience, Carnival’s focus on fun and inclusivity makes it a better fit for those looking for a laid-back vacation.

  • Virgin Voyages: Virgin Voyages targets adults-only travelers with a boutique, luxury vibe. With unique offerings like Michelin-starred dining and wellness-focused activities, Virgin is perfect for those willing to splurge. Carnival, however, remains a top choice for travelers seeking value without compromising on the quality of their experience.

Why Choose Carnival Cruise Line?

Carnival Cruise Line has earned its reputation as "The Fun Ships" for good reason. Here’s why it’s a fantastic choice for your next vacation:

  1. Affordability: Carnival offers some of the most competitive pricing in the industry, making it an excellent option for budget-conscious travelers.

  2. Variety of Itineraries: With destinations ranging from the Caribbean to Alaska, there’s a Carnival cruise for everyone.

  3. Family-Friendly Atmosphere: From kids’ clubs to water parks, Carnival is a favorite among families.

  4. Vibrant Onboard Entertainment: Live music, comedy shows, and themed parties ensure there’s never a dull moment.

  5. Commitment to Safety: Carnival places a high priority on passenger safety, adhering to rigorous health and safety protocols.

Carnival Cruise Line continues to be a leader in the cruise industry by delivering affordable, safe, and enjoyable vacations at sea. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveler, Carnival’s commitment to fun, innovation, and sustainability ensures a memorable experience for all. So why wait? Set sail with Carnival and discover why millions of travelers choose it as their cruise line of choice year after year.

A Short Trip to Tokyo for the Tokyo Marathon

Three Days in Tokyo for the Marathon

It’s crazy how fortunate we can be in life sometimes that it can sometimes throw us curveballs. This fact never escapes me as to how fortunate I have been. This blog will stray a bit from the title to set up the story.

We had a trip planned to Nepal for an Everest Base Camp trek with Adventure Consultants. We were to depart our home in Florida in late March 2023 for that adventure.

In my journey to complete the Abbott World Marathon Majors Challenge, I had put my name in the lottery for a place in the 2023 Tokyo Marathon, not expecting to actually get in because there was like a 1.3% change of getting selected. I mean, I had to at least try to get a lottery entry…surely they weren’t going to select me!

One morning I woke up and checked my email and sure enough there was an email there from the Tokyo Marathon congratulating me on being accepted through the lottery. Huh…how about that.

I walked out to the living room and told my girlfriend, “guess who is going to Tokyo in early March…us!” So now we had to figure out how to fit a trip to Tokyo in while also planning an almost month long trip to Nepal…just 3 weeks after.

Planning

I was not a travel agent/advisor at this point, but planning travel has always been my thing…especially since I’ve been on the hunt for my Abbott World Marathon Majors Challenge 6-Star medal. This part was fun and easy.

I’m pretty sure that I had the entire trip planned in 22 hours and 47 minutes, or something to that effect, after I got my acceptance email. I had a couple of roll over vacation days at work that needed to be used in the first quarter of the year. This was perfect and they couldn’t be applied to our pending trip to Nepal as we left on March 30th for Kathmandu.

I started watching YouTube videos and did some research on the Tokyo Marathon route and the expansive and very intimidating subway system around the vast city. I determined that it would be best to stay within walking distance of the finish line of the marathon, which also happened to be near Tokyo Station, which would end up being perfect for facilitating all aspects of our trip.

We looked at the schedule of events for the marathon like shakeout runs, the expo, etc, and with that, compiled a list of “must-do’s” and fit them in around the race and came up with our itinerary.

Being OneWorld Alliance elite and elite on American Airlines, we booked our Premium Economy flights to Tokyo on American Airlines. Budget did play a bit of a role in our travel planning for this trip as we had invested a great deal already into our Nepal/Everest trip that was coming up. I was banking on having affordable upgrade options available to get us into Business Class for the long flight to Tokyo, but more on that to come.

With our itinerary set, training commenced, tickets for our “fun to do things” in Tokyo purchased and travel booked, we just had to wait for the departure date because surely nothing would change…right?

Travel Hack Engaged

As things often do in the travel industry…things change.

Our flights had initially been booked in to and out of Tokyo Haneda Airport. This was intentional as Haneda is closer to downtown Tokyo, is connected to the metro system via a monorail system and is smaller and seemingly easier to navigate for tourists (this was our first time to the “East,” so we headed a bit into the unknown and decided to play it safe).

I did see when booking that American Airlines did not presently fly into Haneda, so this would be new service for them, but they were selling tickets, so I figured there might be a chance. I also figured that there may also be a chance that they would move the flight arrival to Tokyo Narita airport, which would constitute an itinerary change and give me the opportunity to change flights.

The latter happened. Our arrival airport was changed to Narita as I had hoped.

Japan Airlines was the only other OneWorld airline flying from the US to Tokyo…and Japan Airlines does not have a Premium Economy product in their fleet. Playing it cool, I called American and requested we be booked to Haneda airport as we had originally requested and the agent rebooked us on my intended Japan Airlines flight from Dallas to Haneda…and since Japan Airlines doesn’t have Premium Economy, they booked us on the next available product to avoid having to refund us money, which was business class. Free upgrade complete and travel hack engaged.

Tokyo Bound!

COVID-19 protocols were still in-force in Japan in early 2023 and they did impact some of our travel experiences. Each experience will always be different, yours and mine, so be mindful as you set out on your own journeys.

The service…and the FOOD….on Japan Airlines was the highlight of the trip across the sea. The plane was pretty standard and the business class product was on the older and unimpressive side, but still greatly appreciated. For the primary meal, passengers were given a choice between western meal options or eastern meal options. Being adventurous and wanting to experience worldly things, we chose the local, eastern options which were served in a bento box setting with chopsticks and a small origami swan chopstick holder, making the place setting quite nice.

Arrival in Tokyo

Before going, I had done a lot of research in what to expect at the airport after arrivals and things went pretty much exactly to plan once we exited the plane.

We were ushered through the airport by escorts that had met our plane at the gate to guide us to the COVID testing that was required upon arrival into the country and once that was complete, we went to the arrivals hall, fetched our luggage and headed to get our visas (issued on arrival at no cost for 30-days for US residents). We were in!

Following the advice of some other travelers, I decided to reserve a portable wifi device from one of the airport shops ahead of time. It provided a wifi signal that we connected our phones to so we could access Apple Maps and post on Facebook and other necessary things. It wasn’t too expensive and was pretty handy to just keep in my backpack for the weekend. For pick up, I just needed by reservation email and passport. To return, I was given a pre-paid envelope and I was able to drop off at the hotel front desk to drop in the mail. If you do not have an international plan for your phone, I definitely recommend this service. If you need recommendations or help, feel free to reach out!

The ATMs at the airport were user friendly and easy to find/use to get some Yen before heading out. There were a couple others standing around looking confused, but after a quick chat, I was able to help them figure it out and get what they needed. Make sure you do notify your bank ahead of time that you’re traveling to avoid issues.

Much of Japan is '“cashless,” as they encourage contactless payment options for most things. The easiest form of contactless pay for travelers, I found, is the Suica program. If you have an iPhone, Suica is included in your options for contactless pay programs and you can load Yen on your app even before leaving the US. Suica can be used at vending machines, on the metro system, at 7-11 stores, etc. It was really handy and super easy to use.

Journey From the Airport

We knew ahead of time that many of the signs around the public transportation were printed in both Japanese and English, which was relieving, naturally. It made navigating the city so much easier.

With our bags collected, wifi activated and Suica app at the ready, we started to head into the city center…Tokyo Station. Haneda Airport is connected to the public transit systems via a well thought out monorail system. Yes, an actual monorail like at Disney World! It was so neat. We found the platform and with the airport being the last stop on the line, we need not fear heading the wrong direction. It was crowded, but the monorail cars had specific places to set your luggage, so there was plenty of space. Japan is so organized and orderly and tidy….I loved it.

One thing I will point out as a heads up or a reminder; any time you see a gate or a turnstile or something that you walk through, be sure to scan your metro card or Suica card. I did not know that and I walked through an open “gate” when transitioning between the monorail and the subway lines. An alarm went off and I didn’t think anything of it. When we got off the metro in Tokyo Station to exit out into the city for the short walk to our hotel, the gate wouldn’t let me out. Oops. Fortunately there was an attendant in a booth who was able to help and let me know I had missed a scan point on the way from the airport and he was able to do a “fare adjustment” that allowed me to exit. Whew. It had been a long day.

TOKYO!

We found the correct exit from the station and got our first glimpse of downtown Tokyo. It was amazing! It was just starting to get dark (it was around 4PM by this time). The lights…the skyscapers…the old meets new of Tokyo Station, the Emperor’s Palace and the hustle of the streets, just wow.

Pushing our luggage along the sidewalk, we followed Apple Maps to our hotel. Along the way we passed a series of small restaurants that looked to have some amazing food options….we’d have to check those out at somepoint.

We found the building that our hotel was in, but were initially confused as the entrance to our hotel was on the 15th floor of the expansive tower tucked in next to Tokyo Station. We found the correct elevator and went up to the lobby.

As a recommendation, recommend finding a 7-11 or FamilyMart right away and stocking up on snacks, bottled water, etc for your room. They have the most amazing items at the convenience stores like tuna rice balls, different kinds of canned coffees (both hot and cold), beers…you name it.

Accommodations: Hotel Metropolitan Tokyo Marunouchi

The hotel was nothing extravagant, but it was clean, quiet, well appointed and right outside Tokyo Station and within walking distance of the Tokyo Marathon finish line at the Emperor’s Palace, so from a location perspective, it couldn’t have been better.

I would recommend this as an affordable, safe and comfortable accommodation for anyone visiting Tokyo for any reason, not just for the Marathon.

Contact me for more details and to hear more about this hotel and to help you book!

First Full Day: Shakeout Run and the Expo…and something fun!

The first full day in Tokyo was chilly; it started with a shakeout run around the Imperial Palace. This was by far the coolest place I had done a shakeout run before a marathon. I was not alone in my thinking as there were plenty of other runners doing the same thing. How amazing it was to be running around the grounds of the old Palace.

After the expo and after a quick nap, we had plans for a food/bar tour that evening over in Shinjuku.

I’m not sure exactly how “authentic” this experience was, but our time in Omoide Yokocho was extremely exciting. We met up with our guide at a Walgreens, of all places, near the entrance to Omoide Yokocho. It was centrally located and easy to find.

If you’re not familiar with Omoide Yokocho, it’s a very narrow, very small and a little off the beaten path alleyway right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Shinjuku, near the Shibuya Crossing. It’s lined with small “Izakayas,” which are “mom and pop” food counters that usually only have a few seats at a counter where the food is prepared fresh in front of you. The scene can be quite breathtaking and even a bit “romantic” in the right weather with the right lighting. On the night we were there, it was cool and a bit crowded, but that could be attributed to the fact that the Tokyo Marathon was taking place that weekend (which is why we were there).

I booked our tour through Viator, which has been a reliable source for “fun things to do” in some of our international destinations. Our guide was friendly, helpful and knowledgable, and spoke perfect English. He took us through the maze of the alleyways as we “window shopped” at the different food offerings along the way. The tour included stops at 3-4 Izakayas where we were able to sample a couple of the delightful menu items available and have a beverage (either beer or sake) and the night capped off with a stop at an wonderful and intimate sake bar located somewhere in a tall building, above the noise of Shinjuku.

If my Japanese had been better and I wasn’t so nervous or shy about engaging with people, I would have probably enjoyed going “freestyle” in Omoide Yokocho as opposed to an organized tour, but this was our first visit in the East, and I wasn’t entirely comfortable with the culture or language and did not want to offend anyone or make a fool of myself (a blog about my experience in Paris is forthcoming, where I did just that…), but this tour gave me the introduction to the culture and was a good overall experience.

After a solid night’s sleep, the next day found us traveling to Tokyo Disneyland…that blog is next. Stay tuned and check back often!

Are Boston Duck Boat Tours Worth It? A Comprehensive Review

When visiting Boston, one of the most iconic and quirky experiences you’ll encounter is the Boston Duck Boat Tour. These amphibious vehicles, affectionately known as "Ducks," offer a unique way to explore the city by both land and water. But are they worth the hype? Let’s dive into the pros and cons to help you decide if this famous tour deserves a spot on your Boston itinerary.

The Pros of Boston Duck Boat Tours

A Unique Experience
The Boston Duck Boat Tour is unlike any other sightseeing tour. Riding in a World War II-style amphibious vehicle is a quirky and fun experience that adds a layer of excitement to your exploration. The moment the Duck transitions from land to water is a highlight for many passengers.

  1. Comprehensive City Overview
The tour covers many of Boston’s top landmarks, including the State House, Boston Common, Quincy Market, and Fenway Park. It’s an excellent way to get a quick overview of the city, especially if you’re short on time.

  2. Entertaining and Informative Guides
The "ConDUCKtors" (tour guides) are known for their humor and storytelling. They share fascinating historical facts, local legends, and fun anecdotes about Boston, keeping the tour lively and engaging.

  3. Water Views of the City
Once the Duck splashes into the Charles River, you’re treated to stunning views of Boston’s skyline and Cambridge from the water. It’s a perspective you won’t get on a traditional walking or bus tour.

  4. Family-Friendly Fun
The tour is great for all ages, making it a fantastic option for families. Kids especially love the novelty of the amphibious vehicle and the opportunity to "drive" the Duck while it’s in the water.

  5. Veteran Recognition

During the tour, the ConDUCKtors as if there are any veterans onboard, given the relationship to the amphibious vehicles and the military, and if there are, they get to sign the roof of the Duck, as my dad is doing in the photos below.

The Cons of Boston Duck Boat Tours

  1. Pricey Tickets
At around $65 per adult and $35 per child, the Duck Boat Tour isn’t the most budget-friendly activity in Boston. For larger families or groups, the cost can add up quickly. Seniors discounts are available, so be sure to purchase the correct type of tickets when checking out.

  2. Limited Time at Landmarks
While the tour covers many major sites, it’s a drive-by experience. You won’t have the opportunity to get off the Duck and explore landmarks in depth, which may leave some visitors wanting more.

  3. Weather-Dependent Comfort
The open-air design of the Ducks means your experience can be affected by the weather. On hot summer days, it can get uncomfortably warm, while rainy days might dampen the fun. We were there in late April and the weather was windy, but decently warm and rain-free, which made for perfect sailing.

  4. Crowds and Popularity
Boston Duck Boat Tours are incredibly popular, especially during peak tourist seasons. Long lines and crowded tours can detract from the experience if you’re someone who prefers a quieter outing.

So, Are Boston Duck Boat Tours Worth It?

If you’re looking for a fun, lighthearted way to see Boston, the Duck Boat Tour is absolutely worth it. My parents especially enjoyed it, I think my dad a bit more than my mom, but they still speak of it. The combination of land and water exploration, the entertaining guides, and the unique vehicle make it an experience you won’t forget. While it may not be the most cost-effective or in-depth way to explore the city, it’s perfect for first-time visitors or families looking for an engaging and quirky activity.

Exploring Little Talbot Island State Park: A Paradise with Pros and Cons

Nestled along the northeastern coast of Florida, Little Talbot Island State Park is a hidden gem in Jacksonville, offering visitors a tranquil escape into nature. With its pristine beaches, lush maritime forests, and abundance of outdoor activities, this state park is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. However, like any destination, it comes with its own set of advantages and drawbacks. Let’s dive into the highlights and considerations of visiting this beautiful park.

The Benefits of Visiting Little Talbot Island State Park

  1. Unspoiled Natural Beauty
Little Talbot Island boasts five miles of undeveloped beaches, making it a haven for those seeking a peaceful retreat. The untouched dunes, salt marshes, and maritime forests create a picturesque and serene environment.

  2. Outdoor Activities Galore
From kayaking through the park’s tidal creeks to birdwatching and fishing, there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy. The hiking and biking trails offer opportunities to explore the diverse ecosystems, with chances to spot wildlife like gopher tortoises and shorebirds.

  3. Family-Friendly Atmosphere
The park is perfect for families looking to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature. Picnic areas and educational programs make it a great spot for kids to learn about Florida’s unique ecosystems.

  4. Affordable and Accessible
With a low entrance fee (currently $5 for a standard vehicle in the first half of 2025) and proximity to Jacksonville, Little Talbot Island is an affordable getaway for locals and tourists alike. Its location makes it a convenient day trip for those staying in the city.

The Downsides to Consider

  1. Limited Amenities
While the park’s undeveloped nature is part of its charm, it also means fewer amenities. Visitors should come prepared with food, water, and other essentials, as there are no restaurants or extensive facilities on-site.

  2. Seasonal Challenges
Florida’s hot and humid summers can be intense, and the park is no exception. Mosquitoes and other insects can also be bothersome during certain times of the year, so packing bug spray is a must.

  3. Crowds on Weekends
Despite its tranquil reputation, Little Talbot Island can get crowded on weekends and holidays, especially in peak season. Arriving early is recommended to secure a good spot and avoid the rush. At the writing of this Blog, the park opens at 8am and remains open until sundown.

  4. Limited Parking
Parking at the park can fill up quickly, particularly during busy times. Visitors should plan accordingly to avoid frustration upon arrival.

Final Thoughts

Little Talbot Island State Park is a slice of paradise for nature lovers, offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Its pristine beauty and outdoor activities make it a standout destination in Jacksonville. However, visitors should be prepared for the park’s simplicity and seasonal challenges to make the most of their experience.

Whether you’re a local looking for a weekend adventure or a traveler exploring Florida’s natural wonders, Little Talbot Island is a destination worth adding to your itinerary. With a little preparation, you’ll be ready to embrace all the park has to offer!

A Stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Boston Bayside: Comfort with Room for Improvement

A short review about my recent stay at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Boston Bayside

Boston is a city brimming with history, culture, and charm, and finding the right place to stay is key to making the most of your visit. The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Boston Bayside is a popular choice for travelers seeking convenience and comfort at an accessible price point. Recently, I had the opportunity to stay at this property, and while my experience was largely positive, there are a few areas where the hotel could improve.

The Positives: A Comfortable and Safe Stay

One of the standout features of the DoubleTree by Hilton Boston Bayside is its welcoming atmosphere. From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel at home. The front desk team was friendly and efficient, greeting me with a warm smile and, of course, the brand's signature chocolate chip cookie—a small but appreciated touch.

The hotel itself felt safe and secure, which is always a top priority when choosing a place to stay. Located near the scenic Boston Harbor and within walking distance of public transportation, the hotel is conveniently situated for both leisure and business travelers. Whether you're heading to a meeting downtown or exploring the historic sights, the location offers easy access to everything Boston has to offer.

The rooms were clean and comfortable, providing a quiet retreat after a day of exploring the city. While the hotel is located near a major road, the noise levels were minimal, ensuring a mostly peaceful night's sleep.

The Areas for Improvement: Signs of Aging

While the DoubleTree by Hilton Boston Bayside delivers on comfort and hospitality, it’s clear that the property is beginning to show its age. Some areas of the hotel could benefit from basic maintenance and updates. For instance, the carpets in the hallways appeared worn, and a few fixtures in the bathroom showed signs of wear and tear. These small details didn’t detract significantly from my stay but did leave an impression that the hotel is overdue for some TLC.

A refresh to modernize certain aspects of the property—such as updated furnishings or a fresh coat of paint—would elevate the overall guest experience and bring the hotel in line with the high standards travelers have come to expect from the Hilton brand.

Why It’s Still Worth Considering

Despite these minor shortcomings, the DoubleTree by Hilton Boston Bayside remains a solid choice for travelers. The combination of a safe environment, comfortable accommodations, and friendly service makes it a reliable option, especially for those who value convenience and affordability.

The hotel’s proximity to the JFK/UMass MBTA station and Boston Logan International Airport is another major plus, making it an excellent base for exploring the city or catching an early flight. Additionally, the on-site amenities, including a fitness center and a café, add to the overall convenience.

Final Thoughts

The DoubleTree by Hilton Boston Bayside is a hotel that gets the basics right: safety, comfort, and friendly service. While it could use some updates to match the modern traveler’s expectations, it’s a dependable choice for those visiting Boston. If you’re looking for a place that offers a warm welcome and a good night’s sleep, this property might just be the perfect fit—especially if you don’t mind a bit of character that comes with an aging building.

Would I stay here again? Absolutely. But I’d love to see some updates the next time I visit to make the experience even better.
